Shopping is one of Florida’s favourite pastimes and the area is brimming with impressive retail opportunities. From unique cultural goods through to fashion, art and luxury gifts. Below we have picked some of our favourite shopping destinations in the state, but there are a plethora of alternative spots for those willing to travel.
Be sure to visit San Marco, a quaint walkable neighbourhood located five minutes south of downtown Jacksonville, with plenty of boutiques and antiques shopping. Stop by the Peterbrooke Chocolatier and get a free sample of their homemade chocolate-covered popcorn, their signature snack. The San Marco Bookstore is another local favourite, where you can find an assortment of collectible and rare books. Treasures from the past can be found at Rusted off San Marco Blvd. For the latest fashion trends, stop by Olive, Rosie True, or Reve. Come back for dinner, since the San Marco dining district features some of the best chefs in the city; try Matthew’s, Taverna or Bistro AIX.
Stroll the oak-lined avenues of historic Avondale, one of the nation’s largest National Register of Historic Districts. A variety of specialty boutiques, fine galleries, and gourmet eateries cater to the upscale shopper. Choose from more than 45 stores featuring children’s clothing, women’s accessories, fine art, and antiques. For the latest fashions, check out J. Ashley Boutique, GottaHaveIt!, or Ellie Bing Clothing. If you’ve got little ones, stop by Willies for Kids for clothing, high-end baby accessories and trinkets. If you build up an appetite, then the red velvet and chocolate mousse cupcakes at Let Them Eat Cake will be waiting for you!
Historic Downtown Venice
When staying in the Sarasota area, it is worth paying a visit to Historic Downtown Venice. It is so named due to the surrounding natural waterways and a lot of the architecture is modelled on Northern Italy. It takes just 30 minutes to reach Historic Downtown Venice by car from central Sarasota.
There are over 130 shops, boutiques, cafés and restaurants to discover and enjoy. There is a fantastic mixture of traditional and modern stores, so it is worth taking some time to explore the charms Downtown Venice has to offer. You can choose to take a break from shopping and enjoy a picnic in nearby Centennial Park. One of the defining features of this beautiful park is the Gazebo where on a Friday night live music is performed. Locals and tourists gather in the park to listen to the music and it is certainly a worthwhile spectacle and good way to relax after a day’s shopping.
