History of Amelia Island
Amelia Island Museum of History
The Amelia Island Museum of History is bursting with fascinating stories that are just waiting to be shared with eager visitors and residents. From the Timucua Native American tribe to Spanish and French explorers, from the lawless spirit of pirates to the dignified air of Victorian-era residents, Amelia Island has been home to diverse cultures that have left an exciting heritage behind and the museum sees itself as the caretakers and disseminators of this history, which it shares not only through a wonderful variety of exhibits, but also by providing a multitude of programmes throughout the community for all ages. There’s no better way to start your tour of Amelia Island than with a better understanding of the area’s historic past. At the Amelia Island Museum of History in Fernandina Beach, tour a Timucuan Village, learn about the industries of Nassau County, or peruse historic artefacts related to the Spanish Mission period. Visitors can even book city walking tours or a Fernandina Beach pub crawl.
Amelia Island Lighthouse
Constructed in 1839 using materials taken from the former 1820 Cumberland Island Lighthouse in Georgia, the Amelia Island Lighthouse is the oldest existing lighthouse in Florida. In June 1861, Confederate authorities ordered the lighthouse to be darkened and its lighting apparatus removed. The lens and other lighthouse equipment were shipped in November 1861 on the Florida Railroad to Waldo for safekeeping and then, in October 1864, moved to Madison. After the Union occupation of Amelia Island in March 1862, Federal military authorities recommended that the lighthouse be relit and, in 1864, the lighthouse was again operational. In 2001, the lighthouse was transferred from the US Coast Guard to the City of Fernandina Beach, which now offers public tours of the site.
