If there’s the perfect, all-round way to visit Florida, it is with a fly-drive holiday. In simple terms, this is the way to see more, do more and enjoy more of the Sunshine State than you ever thought possible.

Because there’s more to Florida than just beaches and theme parks – much more. And the only way to sample the full range of possibility is behind the wheel of a hire car, travelling the by-ways and highways of this extensive state (which is the size of England and Wales combined, remember).

From one of the three main gateways – Orlando, Tampa and Miami – there is an almost infinite array of possibilities for exploring at your own pace and setting your own agenda of discovery.

Driving on our Florida Fly-Drive holidays

With your own car and the open road beckoning, you can choose your hotels, destinations and even how long you stay at each place for the kind of tailor-made, free-wheeling vacation Florida is ideal for.

Just select the car type and size you want, complete the formalities on arrival, and head out on the fly-drive holiday you’ve always dreamed about. There is whole state to choose from – you just have to decide which way to head first for a genuine all-American adventure.

And, when it comes to driving, it is both easy and highly recommended. This is how you see the real Florida, the version you don’t see in the glossy brochures but which provides some of the most authentic experiences the state has to offer (and which you’ll find on the collections of America First Coast Travel).

For example, take the drive from Miami to Key West and you’ll encounter some delightful stopping points along the way in places like Key Largo, Islamorada and Marathon, and you’ll be able to enjoy the breathtaking span of Seven-Mile Bridge, the colossal stretch of the Overseas Highway that runs over nothing but glittering azure-blue ocean.

Head south from Tampa and you have a wealth of small town and city experiences that will leave you spoiled for choice for fun diversions in places like Bradenton, Sarasota, Venice Beach, Englewood, Sanibel Island and Naples. The gorgeous resort of Anna Maria Island is another gem that rewards a slow drive, taking Gulf of Mexico Drive all the way through Longboat Key with its blissful ocean views.

Check out Millionaire’s Row

Equally, Palm Beach provides a fabulous route along the ‘Millionaire’s Row’ of South Ocean Boulevard, where the mansions are increasingly eye-popping as you motor out of the city. Continue along highway A1A and there is even more to enjoy on this eye-catching seaside route.

We could go on. There are SO many great drives around this fascinating part of the USA. As well as the obvious attractions, there are great state parks and nature preserves, many of them off the beaten track, just waiting to be discovered by the casual traveller.
